Hallstatt, often considered the quintessence of Austrian beauty, has become an iconic image when people think of Austria. It’s no surprise that it has emerged as one of the top day-trip destinations from Salzburg for international tourists. Although the recent years have seen an overwhelming influx of visitors, Hallstatt’s allure remains undiminished. Despite a brief lull in tourism due to the pandemic, the usual buzz of tourists has returned. As you prepare for your journey, anticipate the crowd levels typical of such a popular destination, but know that the unique beauty and tranquility of Hallstatt are worth navigating the throngs.
1. Expect Crowds – Plan Accordingly
Hallstatt can get quite busy, so it’s important to decide in advance whether you want to stay overnight or if a day trip from Salzburg will suffice. Given that Hallstatt is a small village, the options for accommodation, as well as restaurants and cafes, are limited, heavily tourist-oriented, and hence, can be pricey. However, the village is compact (it takes about 30 minutes to explore the main street), allowing for a relaxed walking tour of Hallstatt’s attractions.
2. Visit Hallstatt in the Winter Season
While summer is unsurprisingly the busiest time, even months like October and April are gaining popularity. Winter, however, is a magical time to visit Hallstatt. The landscape is tranquil and serene, with glistening snow (weather permitting) – it’s quieter and less expensive compared to other seasons.
3. Make Your Life Easier – Travel By Car
If you’re traveling to Hallstatt independently, you can choose between public transportation (train, bus, and ferry) and driving. While many recommend the journey by public transport for its exceptional scenic beauty (including a ferry ride, as the train station is on the opposite side of the Hallstätter See), driving is advantageous if you wish to arrive early before other tourists or want to avoid a two-hour journey. If you’re visiting for just a day, every minute counts! A tunnel through the Salzberg mountain leads you to the village center. Remember, you must park outside in one of the designated parking areas and walk a few minutes to the center.

4. Be Smart – Use Designated Parking
If driving, use one of the fee-based parking lots (P1 to P4), as private parking and no-parking zones are strictly enforced throughout Hallstatt. The parking is well-signposted and hard to miss. The first hour costs 4 euros, with the price decreasing each subsequent hour. I parked at P2 and easily found a spot early in the morning, although spaces fill up quickly by noon. As most visitors don’t stay for an entire day, parking spots often open up throughout the day.
5. Plan Your Return Journey – Drive Through the Gosau Valley
When returning to Salzburg by car, consider driving through the Gosau Valley. This secluded route offers opportunities to enjoy the splendid natural scenery. You can make a detour to Gosausee, stop in Abtenau, or stroll through the old town of Hallein if it’s not too late in the day.
